Mending memories

Textile artist Celia Pym darns old, worn, beloved garments while talking to the owners about what they mean to them. This pullover belongs to Celia Pym’s GP and was knitted many decades ago by his wife.

The pullover and a portrait photo of the owner wearing it, are exhibited in the V&A as one of the works by the 12 shortlisted contenders for a new Woman’s Hour craft prize.

The designer makers were chosen from 1500 applications and cover a wide range of materials and techniques.

I came away from the exhibition with my own shortlist. Apart from Celia Pym, there is the elegant bespoke bike built by Caren Hartley, and there are the tiny, dainty boxes by Romilly Saumarez Smith, all based on found objects ranging from thimbles to clasps and buttons. You have to look closely at the photo below to detect the ancient find that inspired each piece.

We will hear what the jury thought on 8 November when the winner of the £10,000 prize will be announced on Woman’s Hour on Radio 4.
